Tension at Mahatma Gandhi College as SFI flag back on post
Thiruvananthapuram: Sparking yet another scare of a streetfight between two student organisations, on Monday morning, SFI hoisted its flags on the main gate of MG College which has been known to be an ABVP stronghold. The Peroorkada police had appealed to the district Collector to issue an order to permit removal of flags and all materials that trigger discord between students near the campus.
The flag was hoisted at around 8.30am at the same spot where the SFI hoisted a flag triggering clashes last week. “We had been directed not to confront SFI workers on Monday morning and the flag hoisting passed without event. However, police pickets have been put up,” a senior official attached to Peroorkada police station said.
Meanwhile, MG College principal MR Sudarsanakumar has appealed to student organisations to restrain themselves at a crucial time when it was undergoing grading by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). He said that parents were anxious about the safety and education of their children. “Ever since, student politics was banned in the campus by the High Court in 2013, there has been remarkable progress in academic achievements. Classes were not disrupted even for a day. The college managed to get 20 varsity ranks during this span.,” he said.
