KOCHI: The Medical Council of India has put out an advisory reminding students of its earlier decision about not sanctioning MBBS course in certain medical colleges across the country for this academic year (2017-18). The advisory issued on July 21 to prevent exploitation by unscrupulous elements once again reminds students that this year the admission is through a common counselling. Six medical colleges have been denied sanction to admit students to MBBS course this year in Kerala.
These include the SR Medical College and Research Centre, Varkala, and Kerala Medical College, Palakkad, in which the BJP leaders are embroiled in graft allegations. The others are Al Azhar Medical College, Thodupuzha, Mount Zion Medical College, Pathanamthitta, DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences, Wayanad and Government Medical College, Idukki. Kannur Medical College, Kannur, will be allowed to admit students to only 100 seats against its previous intake of 150.
The MCI had announced its decision in this regard in the first week of June and this advisory came in the wake of new attempts to cheat students which came to the notice of the MCI. The proceedings for admission to the private medical colleges by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations are expected only next month. The state government has decided not to go ahead with admissions in Idukki medical college. A few private medical colleges have entered into an agreement with the state government while a few are on track.
Meanwhile, three private medical colleges which have sanction to admit students but have not entered into any agreement with the state government for seat-sharing have decided to go in appeal to the Supreme Court against the HC verdict sanctioning fee fixation by the Justice Rajendra Babu led Admission Supervisory and Fee Regulatory Committee. These medical college are KMCT, Sree Narayana Medical College and SUT Medical College. They have questioned the authority of the fee regulatory committee’s decision to fix the fee at Rs 5. 5 lakh in 85 percent seats.
