Vyttila traffic: Passengers split on new rules
KOCHI: The new traffic regulations at busy Vyttila Junction has evoked a mixed response. Though a section of commuters and drivers support the changes, others say that the new move has rather complicated the system. “Though the diverting of vehicles has helped decongest the signal junction, the NH bypass stretch from Vyttila to Thykoodam has been choked. When big ones take a U – turn at Thykoodam, the traffic flow from both the southern and northern sides gets blocked," said T. Rajasekharan, a KSRTC bus conductor.
“Earlier, buses had to wait at the signal junction, but now we have to travel one kilometre more with no much improvement in congestion. Passengers often question the viability of new traffic regulation.” Meanwhile, a section of commuters and bus drivers said it had ensured smooth vehicle movement except during peak hours. But the pedestrians have demanded more traffic wardens to regulate vehicle movement and help them cross the junction.
“Most of the long distance limited stop private buses are now skipping the junction and taking the small road near the IOC petrol to enter the NH bypass. Hence, passengers are unable to alight at the bus stop before the signal junction. The police should not permit the long distance buses going to mobility hub to pass through the pocket road,” said Anil Kumar, a regular commuter.
