Kerala: Management may grab seats in tech colleges
Thiruvananthapuram: The self-financing engineering colleges are trying to fill vacant government quota seats by converting them into management quota seats. As per the agreement between the government and the managements, the former will stop admission to self-financing engineering colleges after the third phase of allotment. The managements would then have the freedom to make allotment to vacant government quota seats after the third round by converting them into management quota seats, sources said.
After the third phase allotment, nearly 14,000 seats are vacant in private colleges. Even after the third phase of allotment, there has not been a single applicant for 35 courses in various self-financing colleges, while, 85 percent seats are vacant in 184 courses. The exact number of seats would become known only after the last date for admissions ended on July 25.
The allotment for government and aided colleges would continue after this round also. The total number of seats would go up to around 40,000 seats if the vacant management quota seat were also considered. Sources said that many engineering colleges were offering fee lower than that in the agreement with the government. Some colleges even charged fees less than that for government colleges even in management quota to ensure that seats are filled.
