New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, paid homage to the revolutionaries and leaders who fought and resisted emergency imposed in 1975 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, The Indian Express reported. This year marks the 44th anniversary of the emergency.

BJP’s working president J P Nadda called the emergency period a “black blot” on democratic credentials of the nation.

While Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recalled the period as “darkest chapters in the history of the country”. He also urged people to understand the importance of upholding the integrity of our institution.

Home Minister Amit Shah also took to Twitter to share his thoughts and talked about the deprivation of fundamental rights during emergency.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, however, hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party by calling the rule of the present government as “super emergency”.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted his thoughts on emergency stating that the nation should resolve to never repeat emergency-like situation. He, however, erred in calculating the number of years.
This very day 34 years ago India witnessed one of the biggest assault on its democracy with the imposition of emergency by the then Prime Minister.

Senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury, who was an active student leader in the emergency days, also remembered the struggle and the fight to restore democracy.
India is a Secular Democracy. One fundamental pillar, ie of Democracy was hit on this day, 44 years ago as the Emergency. We must remember our fight then to resist it, push it back and then restore democracy.

India was under Emergency between June 25, 1975 and March 21, 1977. Emergency was aimed to control “internal disturbance”, for which the constitutional rights were suspended and freedom of speech and the press withdrawn.
