CPI(M) to support farmers' protest against greenfield project

In this project, the government plans to acquire 6,000 acres of farmland from farmers.

Chennai: CPI (M) has announced its extension of support to the farmers’ agitation, planned from Tuesday onwards, of hoisting black flags atop houses against the proposed Chennai—Expressway project.

In a statement here on Sunday, CPI (M) State secretary K. Balakrishnan said the Union and state governments have planned to construct the Chennai-Salem greenfield expressway corridor by acquiring 10,000 acres of land at a cost Rs 10,000 crore.

In this project, the government plans to acquire 6,000 acres of farmland from farmers.

The project will affect the environment and would spoil thousands of open wells, borewells and lakes, besides affecting wildlife as they will be driven out of their habitat.

The farmers who have opposed the project, which the state government is determined to execute, have planned to vent their anger by hoisting black flags atop houses.
