Parking woes acute at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The drivers and bystanders have found it difficult to take patients to the MCH in four-wheelers as they have to hunt for parking space. In case a weak patient is accompanied by a single driver, often patients have to be left unattended on hospital premises for sometime until the driver can park his vehicle. During peak hours, with outpatient wings working in full swing, car drivers have to tread between 650 metres and one km to find space to park.
Sometimes even the no-parking zone in front of SAT hospital and Regional Cancer Centre also are fully occupied. Local police officers said that such vehicles cannot be towed away as there is a humane angle involved. “Sometimes, the parking grounds in front of OP hospitals block are full. The drivers have to go behind the medical college parking ground or beyond to get parking,” said C, Rajan, a taxi driver. Local police say that at any given time, there are not fewer s than 1000-3000 vehicles parked inside the 139- acre Medical College premises.
According to Medical College officials, more staffers have been allotted to ensure optimal use of parking space. “Multi-level parking space isw part of the masterplan and once it comes up we will have more parking space,” an official said. The premises also have institutions like College of Nursing, College of Pharmace-utical Sciences, Dental College, SCT Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology among others.
