Petitioner created public nuisance, cops tell SHRC.

Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission has directed two cops of Teynampet police station to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 to a woman for beating her four years ago. She went to the police station to enquire why her servant was summoned to the police station for inquiry.

In the petition, K. Malar, Teynampet, submitted that on July 30, 2014, Senthilkumar, constable of Teynampet police station summoned Mahendran, who was working in her house, to the police station for an inquiry. She went to the police station and asked Senthilkumar why her servant was called for inquiry. The constable abused her and scolded her in filthy language.

After coming out of the police station, Senthilkumar chased her and assaulted her with lathi. Saravanan, inspector, also abused her and told her to undress. She sustained injuries and rushed to Government Royapettah Hospital and later she was referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. She sought action against the inspector and constable for assaulting her and for causing mental agony.

In their reply, Saravanan and Senthilkumar submitted that a case was registered against Mahendran for causing nuisance to the public. When she came to the police station, she scolded Mahendran and told him to commit suicide. She also abused the police. Hence, a case was registered against Malar. While she was running away from the police, she fell down and sustained injuries. In an effort to escape criminal proceedings and also to threaten them, she lodged the complaint before the commission.

Judge D. Jayachandran said the police violated her human rights. She suffered humiliation, which amounted to violation of her rights, personal, liberty and dignity, she is entitled to get compensation of Rs 50,000 from Saravanan and Senthilkumar.
