Hyderabad: As a result of neglect by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), many by-lanes in the city have become garbage dumping yards.
Roads are full of open potholes. It is to such extremes that residents have said Hyderabad should be referred to as a ‘garbage city’ and not a ‘bin-free city’.
Cement concrete roads that are dug are left that way. Manholes are supposed to be access points for storm water drains and sewers. Officials want them to double up as ‘speed-breakers’, said Y. Raghuvaran from Dilsukhnagar.
GHMC workers are lifting garbage every day and bin collectors visit households in the mornings but many people throw garbage in the nearby open land or on roads. This can be seen at Charminar bus stop, and RTC crossroads.
When Deccan Chronicle asked some of those who throw garbage beside roads, a common refrain was “I am not awake when the garbage collection vehicle comes to our locality. Moreover, I don’t have money to pay for the vehicle. Most of the bins are in public places like bus stops.” Despite repeated attempts, GHMC officials did not respond.
