Water crisis hits Kochi areas
KOCHI: Water supply in parts of the city areas was hit after the Kerala Water Authority pipeline at Kathrikadavu burst on Wednesday night. Residents of Kaloor, Kathrikadavu and nearby areas will not get drinking water for the next couple of days, until the supply is restored. Though the KWA has laid a new pipeline along Kathrikadavu – Kaloor road in place of the archaic pipe which bursts frequently, all the connections have not been shifted to the new network.
“The burst pipe with three supply lines which is more than 50 years old will not be repaired as it is to be discarded. The entire connections will be shifted to the new line within one or two days. We have laid the new pipeline as the old one has become unusable with leakage and frequent bursts,” said Jessy Jose, executive engineer, KWA.
Water supply in the affected areas will be restored once the three supply lines are connected to the newly laid transmission line. The old Kathrikadavu-Kaloor road was damaged when water gushed out with high force and houses in the areas were also flooded. The road was closed immediately and officials and workers of the KWA arrived on the spot to close the valve as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, there are complaints that the pipeline ruptured when additional water was pumped from the Thammanam pump house to address the scarcity of water in the tail end areas in the distribution network like Cheranalloor.
