Veena George slams religious stamping

The controversy reflects inherent woman bias'

Kochi: Media person Veena George, tipped to be the Left Democratic Front candidate in Aranmula assembly constituency, has come out strongly against the attempts to portray her as a candidate of a religious community. Ms. George said in a Facebook post that such an attempt “needed to be opposed unequivocally”.

“As an individual having a strong opinion against communal polarisation and engaged in working and speaking against such trends I strongly object to the attempt to portray me as a representative of a particular religion,” she said.

Questioning the basis of such a portrayal, she said that she has been working and living as a media person for the past 15 years and her life in the public place was not based on her religious identity. “Why should some people insist that I am not entitled for an independent political opinion just because my husband has been elected to a church committee,” she asked.

Ms. George also questioned the inherent anti-woman bias in attributing the success and recognition achieved by a woman to the influence of her family members. “These people should realise the inherent anti-women attitude in such positions,” she pointed out.

Claiming that she was associated with pro-Left organizations during her student days, Ms. George said that her cooperation with progressive movements was based on the social and political consciousness developed in those days.
“Irresponsible and baseless allegations will not be able to weaken me,” she averred.
