No redemption yet for Kireedam' bridge
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Despite various governments and entities promising to repair Kireedam Bridge, the iconic location that was featured in Mohanlal starrer Kireedam and several other movies, has become a shambles. Though a parallel bridge was constructed, the old one was never razed and continues to be used putting people at risk. The irrigation dept. had prepared an estimate of Rs 10 lakh but when the project never came through, MP Suresh Gopi offered to convince Mohanalal to repair it.
The bridge formerly known as Sivodayam Bridge was located across Valiya canal or Punchakkari canal of Kalliyoor Panchayat. It was featured in movies such as Kallichellamma and numerous teleserials. Its dilapidated condition threatened the lives of people who pass through it from Vellayani temple to areas such as Palappooru, Punchakkari, Vandith-adam, Thiruvallam etc. This paper had reported in 2014 about a local resident Shantivila Padmakumar who approached the Human Rights Commission demanding repair of the bridge. He lamented that two-wheelers and pedestrians used the narrow bridge and their lives were in
danger.
