672 IIT-Madras students placed in first round
Chennai: Despite the setbacks like devastating cyclone and unfortunate death of the Chief Minister of the state, 672 students out of 1,195 registered students from IIT Madras were placed in the first round of placement season.
The first round of placements at IIT Madras began on December 1. After a total of 14 sessions of placement interviews, which were scheduled for the close on December 13.
The placement schedule was given unexpected break on December 6 and 7 due to the demise of the Chief Minister of State. It also faced difficulties after the cyclone Vardah uprooted many trees in the city and particularly in IIT Madras campus.
Totally 176 companies made job offers to the students and more than 50% (90) of these companies are from Core and R&D sectors followed by IT-related sector.
Considering the last year’s fiasco of withdrawal of offers to the students and less interest among the students in joining the start-ups this year, the companies have done rather well at the end of the first round.
Of 70 start-up companies registered this year 45 companies have made 137 offers and 116 students ultimately were placed. “Belcan, Citicorp Services, Enfrein, My Ally and Noodle Analytics are among the major start-up recruiters this year,” said a release from IIT Madras.
The premier institute also expecting more public sector undertakings and government sector companies during the next phase from the middle of January 2017. Coal India, BHEL and CDAC, ONGC and Isro, Indian Navy has participated in the recruitment drive.
“The number of offers received by the students is similar to last year. The large participation by core engineering and even among the start-ups is very heartening. We hope the momentum continue in next phase,” said Professor Manu Santhanam, advisor, Training and Placement, IIT Madras.
“Despite the unexpected break and the difficulties faced during the cyclone Vardah, the placement season was successful thanks to the efforts of the entire team,” he added. Along with the 57 students who have accepted pre-placement offers, the total number of students placed so far is 729.
