Kakinada: Anganwadis stop child marriage
Kakinada: Anganwadis led by ICDS and child welfare department personnel stopped a child marriage from being performed at Samalkot in Kakinada district on Thursday.
According to ICDS officials, a family planned to perform the marriage of a 16-year-old girl. On receiving the information, Anganwadi supervisor Uma Maheswari, G.M.S.K. Lakshmi of child welfare, and Anganwadi workers V. Venkata Lakshmi, M.V. Sri Lakshmi, Vani Devi, and T. Nagamani went to the house of the girl at Samalkot on Wednesday and stopped the programme.
They informed the two families that if they performed the marriage of the minor girl, they would be punished as per the act.
The government personnel took letters from families promising not to perform the marriage. But, on Thursday, the two families got ready for the marriage function. The personnel again went to the house and stopped the function.
The two families informed us that they are only carrying out the engagement programme. They said they would perform the marriage of the girl after she attained 18 years of age.
