IMA Lifetime Achievement Award for poor people's doctor

He is the chief donor and chairperson to Garimella Lakshmi Sameera East Lion's Eye Hospital

VIJAYAWADA: Dr B. Hanumaiah, popularly known as the poor people’s doctor, has been given the Indian Medical Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his yeoman services in the field of medicine. He has been serving the poor for the past three and half decades.

He received the award from IMA national president Dr Sharad Kumar Agarwal and IMA state president Dr Ravi Krishna, at the Doctor's Olympiad 2023 function. Doctors from across India attended the event held at Nagarjuna University on Thursday.

Dr Hanumaiah was born in Nadigadda village in Guntur district and completed his medical education in Guntur Medical College. He started medical practice in 1977 with a consultation fee of '5 and became popular as a poor people's doctor.

He is the chief donor and chairperson to Garimella Lakshmi Sameera East Lion's Eye Hospital. In this hospital, 22,000 cataract surgeries were done free of cost.

On receiving the award, Dr Hanumaiah said, “I feel immense pleasure in getting the prestigious award. It is like a dream come true for me and I promise to keep serving the poor. Now I feel that my responsibility has doubled and will sincerely serve the society for ever.”

He said, “My family members are the backbone for my success, and especially my wife.”
