Hyderabad: The twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad have turned into a virtual garbage dump post-Dasara festivities, with mounds of trash piling up in localities in different parts of the city. Garbage is seen accumulated on roadsides all over, at some places over a stretch of 100 metres.
Garbage is building up even at transfer stations in the city, including Tank Bund, Imlibun and Yousufguda. Owing to showers, stinking rubbish has been giving surrounding residents sleepless nights.
Residents of various localities say despite their complaints through MYGHMC app garbage from their areas has not been lifted, making them feasting spots for dogs and breeding grounds for mosquitoes. With recent outbreak of dengue fresh in their memory, people fear that the disease may multiply faster.
GHMC authorities are, however, maintaining that they have been lifting the usual 6,500 metric tonnes of garbage from twin cities and moving it to Jawaharnagar dump yard. This even as social media is abuzz with complaints and photos of garbage mounds posted from various localities.
“Waste is piling up in public places, residential localities, transfer stations, and everywhere. Nobody has been clearing it for the past three to four days,” complained Jai Prakash, a resident of Musheerabad. Areas in south zone, such as Shahalibanda, Phoolbagh, Aliabad, Patthar Ki Dargah, Petla Burj and other localities are the worst hit. No garbage transfer vehicles have visited areas since several days. Tonnes of trash remain emptied right on the road.
“Ours is a commercial locality. People throw plastic cups and plates on roads everywhere. With unseasonal heavy rains, I will not be surprised if the area becomes a hub of disease-causing mosquitoes,” complains Mohammad Imran, a shopkeeper in Shahalibanda.
"There is lot of garbage blocking one half of the road. I have complained many times to area supervisor. He is refusing to clean this area. Kindly look into this," Mohammed Khalid, another person from a nearby area pleaded.
An entomology wing official of GHMC admitted there is mosquito menace in all 30 circles of the corporation. “This is the season of insects. Not only Hyderabad, the entire country is suffering from this problem," he stated. He maintained that their teams are focusing on curbing breeding of mosquitoes by further intensifying fogging operations in affected areas.
