Nokkukooli: Unions halt construction work in Kochi
KOZHIKODE: ‘Nokkukooli’ menace has stalled construction work in Kochi by a city-based plumbing and firefighting firm even after a High Court interim order for police protection against trade unions engaging in the illegal practice. The managing director of Z TEC MEP Services LLP, Sunil P.K., said the authorities had called them for conciliation talks with the unions along with Asset Homes, which had hired the firm, at their work site office in Thrikkakara.
“Till Wednesday, we are told to stall works. If the main firm lets workers suggested by the union, compromising the quality of work, we are ready to include them, but then, we can not assure quality,” he said. The HC had on Friday ordered police protection to the firm after unionists hindered them demanding ‘Nokkukooli’. Their leaders had taken Rs 14,000 and asked for more for not blocking their work. The firm had also approached the chief minister, state police chief and the district police chief seeking their immediate intervention. The court ordered police protection to complete their work at the construction site near the district jail, Kakkanad.
