Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee list needs Dalits, youth
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The KPCC has sent a revised list for the 282-member governing committee after party vice-president Rahul Gandhi disapproved the first list but complaints still linger about the new list as well. The new list has increased number of women from 13 to 28 but still has underrepresentation of the Dalits and the youth. KPCC president M. M. Hassan consulted former chief minister Oommen Chandy and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala on Monday before revising the list. The names of Attipra Anil and Manacaud Suresh, proposed by senior leaders P. C. Chacko and V. M. Sudheean, respectively, have been included in the list, meeting the understanding reached at the high power Political Affairs Committee meeting last week.
The list, however, ignored Thiruvanant-hapuram MP Shashi Tharoor’s nominees, mainly youth leaders without groups affiliations, who failed to find a place in the list. “It was Revive Movement leaders D. V. Vinodkrishna and R. V. Rajesh who staunchly demanded adequate representation of Dalit, women, youth leaders and newcomers,” said Rajmohan Unnithan, former KPCC spokesperson. “Mr Tharoor had recommended their names but to no avail, implying that only those who have the backing of group affiliations will get proper placement.” Mr Unnithan, however, found himself in the list though he had been dropped from the first list.
“Six members from Nilambur assembly constituency, who include 82-year-old Aryadan Muhammed and his son Aryadan Shoukath, have entered the list under the category of “newcomers”, Mr Unnithan quipped. “KPCC secretary M.M. Nazeer who belongs to Chadayamangalam in Kollam district has been included from Ottapalam in Palakkad against the express directive of central election authority chairman Mullapally Ramachandran that leaders should be included in the list only from their home constituencies.
Similarly, former Chathannur MLA Prathapavarma Thampan has been included in the list from Karunagapally and the local leader from there C. R. Mahesh has been placed at Chathannur.” The amended list has reached AICC general secretary in charge of the state Mukul Wasnik and AICC’s returning officer Sudarshan Nachiappan. They are expected to hand over the list to Mullapally Ramachan-dran on Tuesday.
