People's Welfare Front heading for a split?
Chennai: The People’s Welfare Front seems to be heading for a split with VCK, one of the constituents, convening its executive committee meeting on Monday to decide on participating in the all-party meet called by DMK after the four-party led alliance announced a boycott of the meet.
A day after Mr Vaiko announced PWF’s decision to boycott the all-party meet called by DMK, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan said his party would take a final call on participating in the DMK’s meeting after consultation among his party office bearers on Monday. VCK is party of PWF comprising MDMK, CPI (M) and CPI.
“I have pressed for participation in the all-party meet called by DMK on October 25 in the meeting of leaders of PWF. I explained our stand very clearly. Left parties felt that the timing of the meeting was not right since the nomination filing for the November 19 election to the three Assembly seats — Aravakurichi, Thnajavur and Thiruparakundram — begins on October 26. They felt that participating in the DMK meet ahead of nomination filing may give a wrong impression to public that they were seeking an alliance,” he said.
VCK leader said that the PWF has decided to not to attend the all-party meet on the basis of a majority decision even though his party pressed for participating in the meet which it considered a public issue.
“After consulting with our party’s senior officer bearers, we will decide on whether to participate in the meeting or not,” he said. Interestingly, DMK did not invite VCK for the meeting of farmers association on October 13 but the Left parties farmer wing leaders took part in it.
Speaking to reporters at the airport, Mr Vaiko, who announced the PWF decision to boycott the November 19 election and also not to participate in the all-party meet on Saturday, said that there was no difference of opinion in the PWF. However, he did not respond to the question on VCK’s stand.
He had said that DMK has no locus standi to convene an all-party meet as it failed to take up the case of formation of Cauvery Management Board when it was part of Congress-led UPA at the Centre. He claimed that it was AIADMK, which had handled the Cauvery issue in a right way.
