Disha app helps women in distress; pregnant woman reaches hospital
TIRUPATI: Responding quickly to Disha SOS calls, the Andhra Pradesh police on Friday helped a pregnant woman reach hospital fast and rescued another woman from the sexual advances of a neighbour.
The first incident took place at Thotavari Palem under Ipurupalem PS of Prakasam district’s Chirala late at night on Thursday, while the second was at the Thumburu Harijanawada in Narayanavanam mandal of Chittoor district during the wee hours on Friday.
According to Prakasam SP Malika Garg, Padma – a nine-month-pregnant woman -- was in labour pain and her family members could not arrange a vehicle to take her to hospital. The ambulance control said no vehicle was available at that time.
“The family members immediately made a Disha SOS call and explained their situation to the control room. The cops informed the Ipurupalem SI Subbarao, who rushed a police constable and a home guard by an autorikshaw to the spot. Padma's family took her in the auto to the area hospital in Chirala. She gave birth to a baby boy,” the SP said.
The police on Friday handed over a baby kit to the woman and boosted the family’s morale.
Prakasam SP praised the Ipurupalem SI, contable Gopi Krishna and home guard Sambi Reddy.
Meanwhile, Narayanavanam Police in Chittoor rescued a 20-year-old girl from a youth who tried to sexually assault her around 1.30am on Friday. Some 9 minutes after receiving the SOS call from her, the police reached the spot and took the accused into their custody.
According to Chittoor district SP Senthil Kumar, the 20-year-old woman was alone at her home when neighbour Vikram (28) trespassed into the house and tried to pounce on her.
She quickly reached out to her mobile phone and pressed the SOS button on the Disha app. Responding to the call, Narayanavanam SI Priyanka and a police team reached the spot in nine minutes and rescued the woman. The youth was taken into custody and a court put him on remand.
