Centre against private counseling for medical course

Both the appeals would be taken up together by the Supreme Court on Monday.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Centre has petitioned the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of the counselling conducted by private self-financing medical colleges in states. The Medical Council of India, on behalf of the Centre in the appeal submitted in the Supreme Court, argued that the states should make admissions to self-financing medical colleges through common counseling on the basis of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test list. Apart from the Centre, Maharashtra government also approached the SC demanding the cancellation of the Mumbai high court order allowing managements to conduct counseling to 50 percent management quota.

The Centre in its petition pointed out errors in Kerala high court order allowing managements to conduct counseling for management quota seats. Both the appeals would be taken up together by the Supreme Court on Monday. The main contention was that the order was in violation of the SC directive for a single counseling process for all seats in the state. This spawned anxieties among medical college managements as the deadline for completing the counselling for MBBS seats is September 30. However, the apex court made it clear that the deadline would be extended if necessary.
