Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers offers help for Smart City

IEEE Kerala region has a membership strength of 7000.

KOCHI: She is from Colarado in the United States and heads the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) globally that has 4,20,000 members and is the world's largest association of technical professionals. Karen Bartleson, who is Kochi to take part in the IEEE international conference on data science and engineering at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) says that the governments and municipalities and corporations can make use of the expertise of IEEE professionals for proper city planning and technology implementation.

"IEEE is part of the smart city project in Guadalajara city in Mexico. There are several other such projects where the organization takes part. Cities like Kochi can make use of the expertise of professionals in IEEE for the implementation of the Smart City project here," Ms Karen Bartleson told this newspaper on the sidelines of the conference.

IEEE has expertise in offering smart automated solutions in communication, healthcare, transportation and energy segments which could be of use in Smart City implementation. She says that there are 1,14,000 members for the organization in the Asia-Pacific and Australia region which includes India. IEEE Kerala region has a membership strength of 7000.

Touching on the major contributions of the organization, she said that IEEE set standards and protocols in wireless communication, nuclear power safety, designing chips, communication over broadband and powerlines and in Indian language keyboards. "We have expertise in keeping power grid stable by sharing power to needed places," she said.

Ms Karen Bartleson also said that IEEE contributed majorly in the development of Internet of Things and Internet Initiative, cyber security, cyber privacy and Internet governance. "IEEE has been active in humanitarian activities with technology intervention like solar lanterns and communication equipment in Haiti and Nepal quakes, Asian tsunami and US floods," she said. Ms Karen lauded the Kerala section IEEE activities terming it "dynamic."
