ASP suspends 5 cops in Anakapalli district

Visakhapatnam: The additional superintendent of police Adeep Raj Singh Rana on Monday suspended the sub-inspector, three constables and a home guard of Nathavaram Police Station in Anakapalli district for their dereliction of duty which led to a 36 year old auto-rickshaw driver, accused of sexual harassment case, to jump off from the terrace of the first floor of Nathavaram police station under Anakapalli district on Saturday late evening. He sustained minor injuries and was admitted into the local government hospital. After treatment he was discharged from the hospital. He was identified as K Nani.

The villagers accused the SI and others that they beat up Nani which made him jump off from the terrace.

"During interrogation by the SI, the accused got nervous and jumped from the terrace. We are waiting for the medical report to ascertain whether he was beaten by SI or not. His self injuries were also being certified,’’ the ASP told this correspondent

Nani was summoned to the police station following a complaint lodged by a local woman who alleged sexual harassment by Nani. While he was being questioned, he dashed off to the terrace and jumped from there. He fell unconscious. Local people swarmed the police station after rumors made rounds that Nani was beaten up by the police personnel.

The villagers entered into heated arguments with the sub-inspector Lasminarayana. The SI denied that Nani was beaten and assured that proper investigation would be conducted into the incident. The villagers took away Nani from the hospital after he was given first aid.

The ASP said the police will resume the investigation into the complaint made by the woman who belonged to the Scheduled Tribe. A case was registered against Nani under sections 354A and 354D for harassing the woman.
