Thiruvananthapuram: Around 56.76 per cent government quota seats would remain vacant after the last round of allotment to self-financing engineering colleges which was published on July 20. Of the total of 24,468 seats in these colleges, allotment was held only to 10,538 seats. Around 13,930 seats remained vacant after the third round of allotment.
The exact number of seats would be known only after the last date for admissions ends on July 25. The allotment for government and aided colleges will continue after this round also. Of the 5,010 seats in government and aided colleges, allotment was held for 5,002 seats. In the government-controlled self- financing engineering colleges, 5,557 seats out of the 6,983 have been filled after the third round. Around 1,426 seats remained vacant in them.
Last year, the total number of vacant merit quota seats was around 14, 000. Around 40,000 seats will be vacant when the allotments are completed, if the vacant seats of management quota are also considered, sources said. The number of vacant seats would increase further with allotment to medical and allied courses. Many students would migrate to these colleges from self- financing colleges.
