Ranjith Tamil Nadu topper in IIT-JEE
Chennai: Eight students from Tamil Nadu feature in top 100 rank holders of JEE Main rank list 2016 released by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Thursday.
Chennai’s student J. Ranjith Ganesh has topped the students from the state by securing 37th rank in the country, scoring 300 out of 362 in JEE main exam after his 487 out of 500 in CBSE exam.
The All India rankings are based on their JEE Main score (60% weightage) and Class 12 scores (40% weightage). Admissions to BE and B Tech courses in engineering institutions like NITs, IIITs are made on the basis of these rankings.
“I have secured 166th rank in JEE advanced exam. I am planning to join computer science engineering course in IIT Madras. So this JEE Main ranking will not be useful to me,” said Ranjit Ganesh who studies Maharishi Vidhya Mandir senior secondary school in Chetpet. He said he was preparing for the JEE entrance examination from ninth standard.
Another student, R Raghul of PSBB Millennium School in Chennai who was Tamil Nadu topper in JEE Advanced has secured 42nd rank in the JEE main.
B Pavan Kumar, deputy center head, FIITJEE, Chennai, said that this year, students from the state generally performed well as they give equal importance to JEE and board exams. Meanwhile, in another significant move for admission to the IITs — for which scores in IIT (Advanced) exam is the basis, the first list of allocation of seats for IITs will be released on July 1.
Around 11.28 lakh students had appeared for the IIT JEE Main exam, officials said, adding results were announced a week in advance as compared to last year.
