Kannur University flashes software to check plagiarism

Varsity to introduce software to check plagiarism in research thesis.

KANNUR: Kannur University will soon make it mandatory for all research scholars to verify research thesis for plagiarism and produce an anti-plagiarism certificate along with their research thesis during submission. The University will issue the certificate using the UGC-recommended free software for the purpose. The authorities are planning to implement the rule in three months.

Ahead of the implementation, the University recently conducted a workshop for the research scholars and guides to explain the working of the software and also to create awareness about the importance of the plagiarism check. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Kannur University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr T. Ashokan said that the authorities would soon prepare a detailed report based on the feedback from the workshop and submit it before the syndicate for further deliberations.

“During the workshop we received positive response from the students and guides,” he said. “Now we will prepare a detailed report in which we will discuss the percent of plagiarism that can be allowed in research work and also about the time frame for the introduction of the system in the varsity. If everything goes well, I hope we can implement it by September.”

Many universities outside the state and country check even assignments at degree level using the software to find duplication, Dr Ashokan said. “Introducing a plagiarism check would definitely raise the standard of higher education,” he said. So far no university in the state has made it mandatory to check the thesis using anti-plagiarism software. Last year the UGC had issued guidelines in this regard.
