Government Model Engineering College sees hike in salaries for campus recruitments

The highest pay package of Rs 16 lakh per annum was offered by D.E. Shaw & Co.

KOCHI: The Government Model Engineering College (MEC), Kochi has registered an impressive placement season this year, with over 60 companies recruiting from the campus. The young techies achieved the feat with over 87 per cent students getting placed. The season saw corporates such as Nvidia, D.E. Shaw & Co, Deloitte, SAP Labs, Philips Healthcare, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Amazon, Yahoo, Oracle, EY and Bosch recruiting from the institution.

The college has beaten all its previous records this year, with the average entry level salary shooting up to Rs 7 lakh per annum (LPA) for product-based companies and Rs 4.5 LPA for services companies. The highest pay package of Rs 16 LPA was offered by the global investment management firm D.E. Shaw & Co. MEC witnessed an influx in pre-placement offers (PPOs) this year, with students receiving PPOs from companies such as QBurst, ARM and Intel.

“The companies have surpassed their own previous record this year, in terms of the number of students recruited. Companies like Nvidia, SAP Labs, Bosch and GE Healthcare have been recruiting from the institution for many years now,” said Mr Rajesh Mohan, placement officer of the college.

Some of the other prominent recruiters were Unisys, National Instruments, Bosch, L&T Technology Services, Kalkitech and Huawei, among others. The college was chosen as the venue for the promising ‘Unisys Campus Connect Programme’, aimed at bridging the gap between industry and academics.

In other achievements, three students from the college were selected for the prestigious Google Summer of Code 2016 with a stipend of $5,500. The institution has been also known for its entrepreneurial streak, owing to the many startups like Cognicor, Dolojo and CardioInsight. Out of the 11 members selected from all over the globe for KSUM -FICCI delegation trip to the United States based on student startup activities, one was from MEC.

College principal Dr Prof. V.P. Devassia said: “The amount of industrial exposure students acquire on campus has been instrumental in grooming an all-round engineer. “It is a matter of extreme pride for us that, eight students out of the 18 selected for the prestigious Qualcomm Global Scholarship Programme are from MEC.”
