Fifty water kiosks soon to quench Thiruvananthapuram's thirst
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Around 50 water kiosks will come up in residential areas across the city as water supply could not be normalised persistently in several parts due to lack of pressure. The kiosks are 5000-litre PVC tanks which will be continuously replenished by water tankers. Several locations in areas like Medical College, Kesavadasapuram, Vanchiyoor, SS Kovil Road, Peroorkada and Poojapura were identified for installation. There have been apprehensions regarding kiosks causing law and order issues as too many people will flock to the area.
A district level meeting including police officials will be convened to solve the crisis, said revenue officials. Meanwhile, the water resources minister Mathew T. Thomas said the Railways, one of the largest water consumers, should use water tankers for housekeeping purposes. “If needed, the Railways can fill their coaches from Kochi where water scarcity is not this alarming,” he said. A high-level meeting under chief secretary Nalini Netto will be convened to discuss the issues. Intermittent scarcity had gripped places like Rishimangalam, Kunnukuzhy RC Colony, Jawahar Nagar, NPP Nagar, Chalakuzhy Road, Pottakuzhy, Pongumoodu, Manvila and Akkulam. The water pressure could not be maintained in water lines due to a dip in quantity of water reaching KWA overhead tanks in the city.
