KOCHI: Servant of God Sister Rani Maria is on her way to be Blessed. After the official declaration in this regard, Sr Rani Maria will be known as martyred blessed Sr Rani Maria. The proposal of the Congregation of Cardinals for canonisation in this regard was accepted and signed by Pope Francis. The day for Beatification will be declared later. Till then, she will be known as venerable martyr Sr Rani Maria. “The decision by Pope Francis to beatify Sr Rani Maria is a moment of rejoicing for the Church in Kerala,” said Syro Malabar Church Major Archbishop Cardinal George Alencherry.
Sr Rani Maria who was a Franciscan Clarist Congregation member, did her missionary work in Udaya Nagar of Indore in Madhya Pradesh. She is a member of the Pulluvazhy parish in Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese. Apart from missionary work, Sr Rani Maria was engaged in social interventions for the upliftment of ordinary people in the educational sector and enabling them to earn a livelihood. The feudal lords who were enraged over this hired a goon Samandar Singh to kill her on February 25, 1995. Samander Singh who underwent a long prison term later went to the house of Sr Rani Maria and begged pardon from her parents which had attracted wide public attention.
