National Institute of Technology to study collapse of Pizhala bridge

The Kerala State Construction Corporation undertook its construction.

KOCHI: District Collector Muhammed Y. Safirulla who is also the secretary of Goshree Islands Development Authoritiy (GIDA) informed on Thursday that the civil engineering wing of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Kozhikode will conduct a detailed technical investigation into the collapse of two girders of the under-construction Moolampilly-Pizhala bridge on March 18. The bridge is part of Moolampilly-Chathanad road project which was approved by GIDA general council. The Kerala State Construction Corporation undertook its construction.

The Moolampilly-Pizhala bridge measuring 180 metres has 21 pillars. The bridge was set to be completed in June this year and works were progressing. The total estimate of the bridge was Rs 86 crore. It was later raised to Rs 120 crore later while the estimate for the three bridge cluster is Rs 336 crore. None was hurt on March 18 in the accident as workers had gone on a tea break in the evening when the bridge collapsed.
