Students get to know of meteorology wing in Visakhapatnam

Open House Day organised in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: The World Meteorological Day is celebrated with a chosen theme on March 23 every year to commemorate the establishment of the World Meteorological Organisation, which keeps a constant watch on the weather and climate for a better life and future, said K. Ramachandra Rao, director, Cyclone Warning Centre, Visakhapatnam.

As part of the World Meteorological Day 2016, which carries a theme of “Hotter, Drier, Wetter: Face the Future”, the Cyclone Warning Centre held an ‘Open House Day’ in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday which had seen hundreds of students and other general public. They were precisely familiarised with the scientific developments and technological advances of the Cyclone Warning Centre on Wednesday.

The officials had explained the students and other general public about various equipment including thermometer, psychrometer, mercury barometer, etc. and how they operate various machinery at the Centre. Mr Rao said that they conducted the Open House Day to create more awareness in public about their duties and responsibilities towards the society. He also explained their inland warning services, services to the defence sector, ports and aviation industry, and cyclone warning services.

“The government is planning to implement more advanced prediction mechanisms of cyclones, heat waves, etc. to save many lives,” Mr. Rao added. Muralidharan, a marine fitter student at the CIFNET in Visakhapatnam, informed that he learned some of the practices of the Cyclone Warning Centre, who attended the Open House Day.

ENC celebrates World Meteorological Day

Eastern Naval Command (ENC) celebrated the World Meteorological Day on Wednesday. It is observed every year, to commemorate the formation of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), which was formed on this day in 1950.

Each year, the WMO focuses on a meteorological issue of global significance to human progress, sustainable socio-economic development and environment protection. The theme for the current year was chosen to be ‘Hotter, Drier, Wetter - Face the Future’

The occasion was celebrated with various activities such as painting and essay writing competitions for school children and a presentation on climate change and environment effect on surrounding. This was followed by an exhibition on meteorology and oceanography wherein the visitors witnessed various modern meteorological instruments.
