Demonetisation: Wayanad traders observe hartal

Due to the currency shortage, most traders are unable to pay to the farmers, they said.

KALPETTA: The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Wayanad district unit of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy (KVVES) against the demonetisation was complete. Shops and other business establishments remained closed throughout the day in the district. The Central government’s decision to demonetise Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 has put the trading community in deep financial crisis as the move came at a time as the agrarian district was on with arecanut harvest, the traders said.

Due to the currency shortage, most traders are unable to pay to the farmers, they said. With the Wayanad District Petroleum Dealers’ Association also joined the agitation, petrol pumps too remained closed for the day. However, hartal did not affect the vehicular movement in the district.
