Engineers threaten national stir
Hyderabad: The All-India Power Engineers’ Federation (AIPEF) has threatened to go on a nation-wide strike against the Centre’s reported decision to pass the Electricity Bill in the winter Session of Parliament.
Federation chairman Shailendra Dubey, in a letter to Union power minister R.K. Singh, urged the Centre to put the Bill on hold till the proposed amendments are discussed with state governments and other stake-holders including power engineers and workers, and their concerns addressed. He said the federation had filed its objections with the ministry.
Mr Dubey demanded that the Centre review the power policies of the last two decades before going in for further amendments and experiments with the ailing power sector.
He said the Electricity Act 2003, enacted to restore the financial health of the power sector had failed to achieve its objectives resulting in distribution companies (discoms) being saddled with more than Rs 9 lakh crore in losses and debts.
