Man films wife's suicide; arrested

The police apprehended the man identified as Moddu Penchalaiah (37) of Atmakur, after the video went viral on social media

Nellore: In a bizarre incident, a man filmed the suicide attempt of his wife on his mobile phone and sent the footage to his relatives after her death late on Tuesday night at JR Peta area in Atmakur.

The police apprehended the man identified as Moddu Penchalaiah (37) of Atmakur, after the video went viral on social media on Wednesday.

According to Atmakur circle inspector of police G. Venugopal Reddy, the deceased, identified as Moddu Kondamma (30) was working as resource person in MEPMA (Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas) in Atmakur civic body and was a mother of two boys below the age group of 10.

Kondamma and Penchalaiah used to quarrel frequently after the latter started suspecting her fidelity. Heated arguments took place between the couple over the issue on Tuesday night when their children were at their grandparent’s house, following which Kondamma attempted suicide.

Penchalaiah recorded her suicide attempt on his mobile without stopping her from taking the extreme step. Though she was determined about ending her life, Penchalaiah recorded her actions hoping that it would be useful as evidence to prove that he did not kill her.

He sent the video footage to his brothers-in-law and it went viral after they sent it to some of their relatives, said Venugopal Reddy while expressing shock over the inhuman attitude of Penchalaiah.

He said they filed cases under IPC section 498A (any wilful conduct which is of such a nature as likely to drive a person to commit suicide or to cause grave injury or danger to life, limb or health) and 306 (abetment of suicide).
