Kochi: The CPM is organising a meeting of all Communist and Left parties of South Asian countries in Kochi to provide a platform for representatives of eight Communist and Left parties from South Asian countries. The meeting assumes much significance when institutions like SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) which is constituted for the purpose is diminishing its significance, said CPM Politburo member M.A Baby.

The party is trying to make an effective intervention to better the cooperation between South Asian countries under the leadership of people’s movements, he said while addressing a press conference here on Friday. “The meeting will discuss people’s issues in SAARC countries and the ties between the member countries. Challenges like communalism and religious sectarianism being faced by the countries will be discussed. There will be discussions on forming a permanent platform to discuss such issues,” he added.

CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury will inaugurate the meeting on Saturday. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, party state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will attend. As many as 27 delegates from various countries including India will attend the two-day event. Representatives from Pakistan are not able to attend since they were denied visa.
