No consensus at meet on bins in Poojappura
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A consensus eluded the meeting over Poojappura aerobic bin issue on Friday, even as Corporation officials claimed that everyone agreed to take the idea forward. Mayor V.K. Prasanth reportedly said that if at all there were any problems with the working of the aerobic bin, he would take responsibility for its failure, and dismantle the bins. He gave Poojappura residents a tour of the bin within Corporation premises.
The date for work to begin was not discussed. Reliable sources say that though there were some objections in the beginning, everyone appeared to agree with the Mayor. However BJP’s V.G. Girikumar said that despite all objections, the Mayor decided to go ahead with building the aerobic bin shelter. “The decision was thrust on the members,” he said. Poojappura councillor B. Vijayalekshmi refused to comment. Most of those present were of the opinion that the bins should be shifted, according to Saraswathy Temple Trust president V Jaishankar.
“There were representatives from BJP and Congress as well as Saraswathy Temple Trust members, Poojappura Unni Residents’ Association (PURA) representatives and Nanma Collective representatives. Everyone objected to the location being chosen. Nanma representative said that every initiative of the corporation has been a failure. but would cooperate with its waste management system. If they go ahead with the plan, people will protest strongly,” he says. There is a space around 50 m from the present spot, and the bins should be relocated there, Jaishankar said. According to Corporation officials, one bin will be shifted away from the gate of Poojappura ground.
