C V Anand garlands the statue of Raja Bhadur Venkata Ram Reddy

Hyderabad: City police commissioner C.V. Anand garlanded the statue of Raja Bahadur Venkata Ram Reddy to mark his 153th birth anniversary.

The commissioner hailed the pioneering contributions made by Raja Bahadur Venkata Ram Reddy who had served as 14th kotwal, or police commissioner, during the Nizam era.

“The kotwal system predates 1847 and the reforms made by him marked their presence in the glorious 174 years history of city police, '' the commissioner said during the celebration that was organised by the Raja Bahadur Venkat Rama Reddy Educational Society at YMCA crossroads at Narayanguda here.

“In 14 years service as city kotwal, handling both civic & policing works, he relentlessly worked on abolishing many social evils prevalent in those times.” Anand said.

The educational institutions established by the Raja Bahadur to uplift society still pays rich dividends. Anand said his own family had benefited by studying in those institutions.

He appreciated presented gold medals and `5,000 cash to U. Madhan Kumar Goud, sub-inspector of Central Crime Station, for outstanding performance
