ASI suicide: Kin, residents demand action against SI

Initially they refused to do the funeral while demanding suspension of the senior officer who was transferred to Kottayam on Wednesday evening.

Kochi: High drama unfolded at Kuttamassery near Aluva here on Thursday when local residents and relatives of ASI P.C. Babu, who committed suicide the other day, protested demanding stern action against Thadiyittaparambu Sub Inspector who they held responsible for his death.

The Grade Assistant Sub Inspector, attached to Thadiyittaparambu police station, was found hanging in his ancestral home at Kuttamassery on Wednesday morning. A WhatsApp message earlier posted by the victim, blaming sub inspector R.Rajesh responsible for his extreme act, started doing the rounds later.

The protestors, including people's representatives, laid siege to Aluva-Perumbavur road and held a sit-in protest when the victim's body was brought home from hospital.

Initially they refused to do the funeral while demanding suspension of the senior officer who was transferred to Kottayam on Wednesday evening.

"We called off the protest after S.Surendran, DIG in-charge, Ernakulam, arrived at the scene and assured a fair and impartial probe into the matter after which the action will be taken. We'll wait for police action and will indulge in protest path again if they fail," said Aluva MLA Anwar Sadat.

"This is not a one-off case as there were a few similar cases in the last couple of months. The trend can be prevented only if strict action is taken against accused," said Benny Behanan, MP.

Top police officers including District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) K.Karthik and Mr Surendran paid their last respects as the body of the deceased police personnel was cremated at the cemetery of NSS Karayogam at Kuttamassery.

Meanwhile, sources said a team led by K.M. Jijimon, DySP, District Crime Branch, has been formed to probe into the charges.
