Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport have seized 500 kg of red sanders worth Rs 25 lakh, which was bound for Hong Kong, on Wednesday.
According to airport sources, the customs officials had been checking the boxes to be exported in the cargo section of the airport on Saturday. On suspicion, the officials offloaded three consignments just before they were scheduled to board to Hong Kong, said the sources.
The officials had tried to contact the mobile number and the address found on the consignments only to found the details are false. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the customs officials opened the consignment and found small logs of red sanders that were kept in the boxes.
“The officials seized 500 kg of Red Sanders that can easily fetch `25 lakh in the international market,” the source said. A case was registered and the officials are investigating the CCTV footages recovered from the parcel-booking agency to find out about the details of the persons, who had booked the consignments.
