Women power boosts SFI win Students' Federation of India

Maharaja's gets woman chairperson after 70 years.

KOCHI: Women power is set to lead the students union in Maharaja’s College as seven candidates contesting in the SFI panel scoring impressive win in the elections held on Tuesday. Mridula Gopi A.G. has been elected as chairperson of the college. A girl student has been elected as the chairperson for the first time in seven decades in the college. Apart from Mridula six other girl students won various positions including the vice-chairman post won by Shahana Mansur. Other girls who have won elections included Sunainan Shinu, Irfana P.I., Vidya K., Sarangi K. and Sreelekha T.A.

The pro-CPM Students Federation of India (SFI) has swept the elections for colleges affiliated under the Mahatma Gandhi University in Ernakulam district and other places. SFI claimed victory in 127 out of the 132 colleges in which elections were contested by various student organisations. KSU, ABVP and MSF failed to make much of an impression in the polls. The SFI has made impressive gains in the UC College Aluva and Al Ameen College Edathala in Ernakulam. SFI has captured the union leadership from KSU-MSF alliance after a period of nine years in Al Ameen College while in the UC College it managed to win all seats by defeating the KSU candidates. KSU had won the elections in the previous year.

In Kochi Gujarati College, Trippunithura RLV College, Poothotta SS College, St, Thomas College Puthen Cruz and few other colleges SFI candidates won all seats without opposition. Out of the 86 University Union Councilors in the Students Union of MG University, SFI managed to win 77, while leaving just nine seats for others in the fray. SFI district president V.M. Junaid has credited the victory to the secular principles upheld by the SFI in the campus. Upholding secularism and fight against communalism was the main slogan of the SFI in the elections, he pointed out.
