Vyttila-Kunnara Park road to be relaid

The PWD authorities have decided to relay the stretch with concrete tiles considering the poor drainage along the stretch.

KOCHI: Vyttila – Kunnara Park stretch, the less than 1 km portion of busy Ernakulam – Kottayam Road is finally to get a makeover. The portion from the exit point of Vyttila mobility hub to Kunnara Park has been in a rundown condition for long as the Public Works Department didn’t carry out annual maintenance works due to the ongoing road widening works from Kunnara Park to Petta.

“The stretch has been included in the Sabarimala roads maintenance project. The portion will be re-laid with concrete tiles at an estimated cost of Rs 1.87 crore. Tenders will be invited after getting administrative sanction,” said PWD (roads) executive engineer Benny John. Though the PWD re-laid the small area at the exit point of Vyttila mobility hub with concrete tiles earlier, the agency failed to repair the remaining stretch.

The PWD authorities have decided to relay the stretch with concrete tiles considering the poor drainage along the stretch. “Even if the road is re-tarred it will not withstand even the first spell of rains due to poor drainage. While the number of vehicles has multiplied over the years, nothing has been done to improve the drainage system,” added the PWD official.
