State free from social backwardness: R Balakrishna Pillai

He said that Brahmins were not getting enough support from the governments as they were not a vote bank.

Palakkad: The social and financial status of people in the state had changed over the years and there was no social backwardness at present, State Forward Communities Welfare Corporation chairman R Balakrishna Pillai said. He was attending a meeting of Brahmana Sabha in Palakkad on Tuesday. “The social backwardness during the time of untouchability and casteism that existed in pre-independence India does not exist now,” Mr Balakrishna Pillai said.

"The financial condition of the people has improved as well. The financial backwardness which exists now can be seen among all the castes,” Pillai noted. He said that Brahmins were not getting enough support from the governments as they were not a vote bank. “At one time, there were several IAS officers from the Brahmin community in Kerala and now things have changed. The community needs to look seriously into such changes,” he noted. He added that the NDA government was expected to improve the plight of those among Brahmins who were backward financially.
