An SWR official confirmed that efforts are on to decongest the KSR station by increasing the capacity of other terminals.

Bengaluru: The South Western Railways (SWR) is chalking out plans to decongest Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) or City Central Railway Station over the next three years.

If all goes well, most of the trains will originate or terminate at stations like Yeshwanthpur, Cantonment and the proposed third coaching terminal at Byappanahalli, instead of KSR station.

An SWR official confirmed that efforts are on to decongest the KSR station by increasing the capacity of other terminals. Works on the third coaching terminal at Byappanahalli is in progress, but will take another year before it becomes fully functional.

"There were complaints of congestion at KSR railway station for a long time. Now, SWR has decided to increase capacity at other stations like Yeshwanthpur, Cantonment and Byappanahalli. The trains starting and terminating at KSR station will be sent to these three stations. We have already started working on the third coaching terminal at Byappanahalli and it will be ready in a few days," an SWR senior official told Deccan Chronicle.

The sources said that SWR is planning to convert Yeshwantpur station into a mega terminal at a cost of Rs 120 crore in three years. The station now has six platforms. Also, the Railway Board has sanctioned Rs 37.9 crore in 2018-19 to convert tjhe Cantonment Railway Station into a suburban terminal. SWR is planning to build four additional platforms at Cantonment station in two-three years. Once the entire project is completed, the trains will be halted for only 15 to 20 minutes at KSR station and then will be moved to other stations. As of now, long-distance trains are parked at KSR station causing congestion.
