Narrow escape for 40 passengers from city as bus falls into canal

Many of the passengers were asleep when the accident occurred.

Vijayawada: Forty passengers travelling from Hyderabad to Narsarapuram in AP had a narrow escape when the Orange Travels bus fell into a canal on Sunday morning.

Passengers alleged that the driver’s negligence caused the accident near Vanapamula of Pedaparupudi mandal of Krishna district, about 320 km from Hyderabad.

Many of the passengers were asleep when the accident occurred. They woke up when the bus suddenly swerved and landed in the canal used to provide irrigation water. Passengers said the driver and other staff of the bus fled the scene.

Local residents rushed to the spot and helped the passengers deboard. Police was called in and they responded immediately. Five of the passengers sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital in nearby Gudivada, where they were treated as out-patients.

The police has registered a case against the bus driver and contacted the Orange Travels authorities.
