Kerala: Foul play alleged in girl's suicide
KOZHIKODE: The family of Sreelakshmi P.K., 19, who committed suicide at her nursing college hostel on July 15 alleged foul play and said that the investigation was not in the proper direction. Sreelakshmi’s elder sister Aiswarya P.K. on Friday alleged that the hospital was misleading the police about incidents that took place a year ago and was not probing recent issues that eventually led to the girl’s death.
Sreelakshmi, daughter of Unnikrishnan and Sunila, Karingali house, Koomulli, was a second year general nursing student at Baby Memorial hospital’s college of nursing. She was staying in a hostel by the hospital management, and according to her sister, there were serious issues in the hostel, about which Sreelakshmi had to give her statement, just two weeks before her death.
“There was illegal activity between one of the lady tutors and a girl student in the hostel. When a committee had called up other students to investigate the issue, Sreelakshmi had given her statement. She had informed the family also. This issue was not revealed to the police by the hospital management and instead they are pointing at a relationship, the girl had almost an year ago with a man from another community,” said Aiswarya.
She also alleged that the girl was found in a room opposite to her room in the hostel, which was otherwise kept locked. As the matron keeps the keys to that room, the family has brought up the suspicion about how the girl could open the room, before hanging herself. The sister also complained that the body was not shown to the relatives, before police checked and the mother was informed that the girl was missing. The mother was not allowed to check the room in the hostel too, she said.
Aiswarya, also filed a complaint with the City Police Commissioner Uma Behra, demanding an unbiased probe. Meanwhile, Hindu Aikya Vedi Kozhikode district committee said that the case be handed over to the Crime Branch is to clear the conspiracy behind the death.
Hospital dismisses allegations
The management of Baby Memorial Hospital on Friday dismissed the allegations raised by the family of Sreelakshmi, who was found dead at the hostel room on July 15. The hospital says that the new allegations are aimed at diverting the investigation into the suicide. In a statement, academic coordinator Dr Roy K. George said that the girl’s mother had arrived at the hospital soon after they were informed that the girl was missing.
“The mother of the girl said that she had a relationship with a man from another community and we sent her to Medical College police station along with a supervisor and lady warden,” he said. The hospital did not launch another complaint with the police since her mother had already complained. They added that the photograph of a man was found from the girl’s belongings and her friends confirmed that it was the same man who had a relationship with the girl. The management also demanded a comprehensive probe into the matter to bring out the truth.
