Thiruvananthapuram corporation council passes cleanliness bylaw without discussion

The council took up these agendas in the final 10 minutes if the meeting.

Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Council on Thursday passed the cleanliness management committee bylaw and accepted the renewed D&O license fee without discussion. The council took up these agendas in the final 10 minutes if the meeting. The hurried decision was taken, ignoring BJP's demand to convene a special council meeting to discuss it in detail. At an all-party meeting held earlier, BJP raised objections against certain aspects of the bylaw.

"It's important that the bylaw is discussed in detail. The agenda on D&O license fee also warrants a detailed discussion. With 10 minutes for 6 pm (the cut-off time for discussion), Mayor should not declare all agenda passed," said BJP councillor V.G. Girikumar. Even many councillors complained that both the agendas, presented by health standing committee chairperson K. Sreekumar lacked clarity.

The agenda concerning D&O license did not delineate the licensing fees, they said. LDF's Bindu Sreekumar and Solomon Vettucaud, as well as UDF's Johnson Joseph, insisted that the agenda on the bylaw be passed at the earliest. Ms Sreekumar said that several projects were stuck due to the non-approval of the bylaw. Mr Joseph said that, if anyone had any suggestion, they can submit the same in writing, and the council can discuss them at a later date.
