Madras HC: Take action against helmetless riders
Chennai: Noticing large scale violations of helmet rule, the Madras HC on Wednesday asked the state government to take stringent action against violators.
While hearing an unrelated case, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan raised the issue of helmetless riders and said too many people were going without helmets nowadays. "Why the rule is not being implemented like before," the Bench asked Additional advocate general P.H. Arvindh Pandian.
“While I was travelling in a car, I noticed a large number of two-wheeler riders without helmets. More than two were travelling in a single bike. There could be aberrations, but here a large number of violations are being noticed. It requires close monitoring and much more strict action is needed,” Chief Justice added. To this, Arvind Pandian said he would take the observations of the court to the authorities concerned and ensure strict implementation of the court orders and the rules relating to helmet.
Justice N. Kirubakaran of the Madras HC had on June 9, 2015 made wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders compulsory from July 1, 2015.
