Yacub murder: 5 RSS workers convicted

Kannur: Thalassery additional sessions court II judge R.L. Baiju on Wednesday sentenced five RSS-BJP workers to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of them for the murder of CPM worker Keezhur Kalluvalappil Yacub, 24, in June 2006.

Those convicted are Shankaran, 48, RSS former taluk karyavahak Keezhur Meethale Pun-nad Deepam house; Vilangery Manoharan alias Manoj, 42, Shankaran’s brother and BJP mandalam president; Vijesh, 38, Thillankery Oorp-palli Puthiyaveettil; Koderi Prakasan, 48, Keezhoor Kottath-ekkunnil; and P. Kav-yesh, 40, former RSS taluk karyavahak Keezhur Punnad Karatt house. The fine should be handed over to the District Legal Services Authority. The court also exonerated 11 accu-sed, including RSS leader Valsan Thill-ankery as the prosecution failed to prove the charge of conspiracy against him.

It was on June 13, 2006, the youth was attacked by a group of BJP workers who barged into his house. He managed to escape and sought refuge at a nearby house. However, the BJP workers hurled a bomb at him and hacked him down, according to police.

Additional district government pleader K.P. Binisha appeared for the prosecution while P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, T. Sunilkumar and P. Premarajan appeared for the accused.
