Cotton Hill to welcome new kids June 3
Thiruvananthapuram: Lower primary sections at the Cotton Hill School here are all set to welcome the children on June 3, the opening day of the new academic year. A total of 900 students would be joining the government LP School which has seven sections. Apart from academics, the focus is on extra-curricular activities and language.
This year the school plans to hold extra classes for LP section to help students develop their spoken language schools right from the beginning. New teachers have been appointed to enhance the communication skills of the students.
“For children who belong to families from poor financial background, the school provides additional support in improving their languge skills. The emphasis is also on spoken English. They are made to do activities which help in improving language. All this is being done to build a base in language so that they can easily improve upon it on reaching higher classes. There is a popular perception that better language is only acquired by students who study in CBSE and ICSE syllabus. That is wrong,” said a teacher.
Apart from classes on spoken English, the school brings in teachers from outside to teach dance, music and drawing. “We give additional classes to our students for free. Our students come from both well off and poor families. But they get the same facilities here,” said Sujitha, vice chairperson.
The teachers claimed that the number of students was increasing every year. Many were even coming from private schools to take admissions here.
Like every year the focus will also be on providing nutritious breakfast and lunch to the students.
The breakfast menu includes idli, puttu, uppumavu and for lunch it is kootu curry, vegetable thoran and rasam along with rice.
