Two killed, seven hurt in roof collapse in Namakkal

A group of others including the hospital’s ambulance driver, Mohanraj, had also similarly taken shelter near the hotel.

Namakkal: Strong winds wreaked havoc in Namakkal on Monday evening, pulling down hoardings and construction scaffoldings that crashed on the roof of a hotel adjacent to a noted private hospital here and killing two persons including a woman doctor and critically injuring seven others.

Police said that Dr S Kala, 55, who works in that private hospital and wife of the Namakkal government headquarters hospital’s superintendent, had taken shelter from the sudden heavy rains accompanied by strong winds near the hotel when the tragedy happened. A group of others including the hospital’s ambulance driver, Mohanraj, had also similarly taken shelter near the hotel.

With a hoarding and construction scaffolding coming crashing down, the roof of the hotel also partially caved in trapping all the people taking shelter there. Other people nearby tried to pull them out, but Dr Kala and Mohanraj were killed on the spot, police said, adding, seven others critically injured have been admitted to the adjacent private hospital here. Namakkal police have registered a case and investigations are on.
